About
I take a lot of inspirations from cartoons, books, the world around me, games, and my own imagination. I’ve always had an active brain, deep emotions and complex things became the main themes over everything else happening in my head. I was always fascinated with how complex love, sadness, and other themes such as obsession and identity, could get. Which is why I’ve been drawn to human complexity and use the world around me as a reference. It could be myself, people at school or the school itself, on the streets, or even online. Over time, my art process has changed into more of myself, it’s becoming more experimental and even branching out to much more than just 2D and also allowing more characterization to it.
I start my process usually with really messy sketches and also texting one of my best friend random ideas. This helps me empty out my brain to save other ideas for later on or for new projects. Themes and experimentation are very important parts in my works. Whether it is something I see online or outside, it would interest me enough to make me believe I could do it too. So, I tend to use references and sometimes watch other people’s drawing/painting processes, then I try to wing it by memory. When I know the piece is complete, is when I feel like nothing else needs to be added. That what I want it to show or convey is clearly seen on the piece, or it be read and create a story.
My name is Mayla, I am a second year student at Dawson College.
